Kent Blacksmith's Ledger 1911 to 1914

Edward Kent's Blacksmith's account book. One entry for 1911, the rest are 1912 and 1913. There are six pages of 1914 entries.  Transcribed by Clarice Barriball 2026.

This Kent Blacksmith’s Ledger was given to the St Neot Historians by Peter & Bridget Kent, our thanks to them both for allowing us to keep this valuable social legacy of St Neot’s past. It contains very many local names and includes lots of addresses allowing us also to record who lived where during the first three years of World War One. Our thanks also to Clarice Barriball for the many hours spent on Thursday mornings in the Archive transcribing these records for us.

Below is an image of the Front Cover. The Ledger measurers 33.1cm x 15.5cm. There are 3 pages of Charts at the back of this booklet, they contain an alphabetical list of entries in the ledger. The 1914 entries (on pages 5, 6 & 7 of this booklet) are NOT included in the charts. The images are of good enough quality to expand and read.

The pages in this ledger were not numbered, they now have been to facilitate researching the contents.

Page number 11 is the only page with a 1911 entry. Mr T Chapman appears to have carried out work for Liskeard District Council (p11, p12 & p107) and the County Council p159 & p160. 

Work was also undertaken for Liskeard District Council by G Hodge and J Crapp. The entry for Mr Crapp may read “by J Crapp” or alternatively “G J Crapp” the writing is not clear!

Work was also done for the Gazeland Clay Company (p 136) in November 1913.

The entries on page 151 include “C & T Keast” Polventon at the top of the page. At the bottom is the account record for Mr Roscorla, his address is given as Tremant, is this a mis-spelling for Trenant? 

In the middle of the page, in between the aforementioned entries is a list of seven names and sums of money all adding up to  £11-18s-3d. Don’t forget 12d = 1shilling, 20 shillings = £1.

The names include G Worden, Keast, T Hooper, A Warne, Wills, C Olliver(?) and S Wills. No indication is given as to whether these amounts are owed or have been paid in.

At the back of the ledger pages 164 to 169 contain mostly single line entries . Page 164 is entitled “1914 Work” and dated from January 5th onwards. Page 169 ends on February 2nd 1914. All entries have been subsequently crossed out.
