Meat and Transport Book 1902 to 1926
The Meat and Transport Book contains details of both meat deliveries and transport of people and haulage of goods. On occasions dairy products were also included with meat deliveries. Transcribed by Chris Timms April 2026
The “Meat & Transport” book is large enough to be justifiably called a Ledger! It measurers 33.7 cm x 14.5cm. The ledger is a mid-grey in colour with dark green spine and triangular corner pieces. “Ledger” is written in gold on the spine. The first few pages consist of an alphabetical index. The account pages are numbered 1 to 338 but only 1 to 290 have entries on them, a few pages within this range are empty.
The following pages in this booklet contain columns “A” to “H”. Column A shows the surname of a person or company details, the initials of the person are in column B, their title is in column C. Column D indicates meat or dairy deliveries. Transport of goods and people is recorded in column E. Sometimes other functions are performed, they are mentioned in column F. The year of the start of the transactions is listed in G. Column H contains the page number of the entries in the original ledger.
Below are the Alphabetical lists of Family and Company names in the Ledger

To help you with your sums, 12d = 1s; 20 s = £1. There was a coin called a Farthing, a quarter of an old penny, this would have been written as for example "8s 10¾d". ¾ = 3 Farthings, there were 960 farthings to £1. Having 100p to the £ is so much simpler!
